Share-A-Book Saturday (6)

This is something I found over on Just Another Book Addict =), and I thought I'd do my own. There are so many great books out there that get overlooked (especially if they've been out for a while)!

Every Saturday, you share (recommend) a book, preferably one that you haven't reviewed yet. It's just a way to get other books out into the blogging world. This is NOT a review.

Today I'm going to recommend The Wreckers by Iain Lawrence.

There was once a village bred by evil. On the barren coast of Cornwall, England, lived a community who prayed for shipwrecks, a community who lured storm-tossed ships to crash upon the sharp rocks of their shore. They fed and clothed themselves with the loot salvaged from the wreckage; dead sailors' tools and trinkets became decorations for their homes. Most never questioned their murderous way of life.

Then, upon that pirates' shore crashed the ship The Isle of Skye. And the youngest of its crew members, 14-year-old John Spencer, survived the wreck. But would he escape the wreckers? This is his harrowing tale. (Product description from Amazon.com.)

I can't remember how I came across this book, or why I decided to pick it up. It may be that it was featured in a display at the library of books by Canadian authors. Whatever the reason, I did pick this book up... and I devoured it. I know I read Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped at some point, and this book reminded me of that a little bit... the setting, the story, the characters.

If you like adventure stories with a historical setting, you'll probably enjoy The Wreckers. It's the first book in The High Seas Trilogy; the other two books are The Smugglers and The Buccaneers.

  1. This does sound pretty good. This is one thing I can say about visiting blogs, books I would not have looked at before are mentioned and I get to hear what others thought of them and they actually sound good.

    Great post!
