Book Blogger Hop (12)

Book Blogger Hop

In the spirit of the Twitter Friday Follow, the Book Blogger Hop is a place just for book bloggers and readers to connect and share our love of the written word! This weekly BOOK PARTY is an awesome opportunity for book bloggers to connect with other book lovers, make new friends, support each other, and generally just share our love of books! It will also give blog readers a chance to find other book blogs to read!

This week's question is from Marce of Tea Time With Marce:

"What very popular and hyped book in the blogosphere did you NOT enjoy and how did you feel about posting your review?"

Almost every very popular and hyped book in the blogosphere falls into my "did not enjoy" category.  From the Twilight series to Wicked Lovely to If I Stay to the Immortals series...  It seems that the more hyped a book is, the less likely I am to enjoy it.  I'm not sure if that's because too much hype is off-putting, because I go into it with too-high expectations, or because lots of hype doesn't necessarily mean the book is good.  The big exceptions I can think of are Before I Fall and The Hunger Games.  Both had lots of hype, but I really enjoyed the stories.

I don't feel bad about posting negative reviews, especially if a book has gotten lots of positive hype.  Often, if I didn't enjoy the book, I will feel cheated or misled by all the hype.  So I want to get an alternate viewpoint out there and maybe save someone else from wasting their time on a book that they probably won't like.

  1. *nods* Almost the same story, here. Hype=did not enjoy, most of the time. I think I should take more assurance in the fact that, as you say, hyped books have plenty of love, so my negative reviews wont' be hurting anybody. :-)

  2. I'm with you on Twilight, but I really liked Wicked Lovely. I think it's split evenly for me on YA novels on whether or not I'll like them.

  3. It's funny how too much hype can lead to a letdown ... maybe because we expect it to be amazing, and then the book just doesn't resonate. :)

    Happy Hopping!

  4. Hello! Hopping by! I would be interested to know what you didn't like about Twilight and Immortal. But not every book is for everyone! Have a great weekend :)

  5. I love to read negative reviews especially on hyped books in order to get another point of view, exactly. :-)

  6. I have heard that all of those are wonderful books, and I myself absolutely love the Twilight series. However, I will not start ranting because everyone has there own opinion. Sorry you didn't enjoy these books! New follower!

  9. Old follower hopping along! It is so funny that you said that about Twilight. I'm not the biggest Twilight fan in the world, but I did enjoy the stories (NOT the movies). I was WAYY late to hop on the Twilight bandwagon and I think that made me enjoy them. I think if I would have started them when they first came out I would have been disappointed.

    Happy Reading!

  10. Well, it's always fun to start a debate. Not everyone can agree on a book. :)

Hm, sometimes I like NOT to read reviews before I read a book just so I don't get overexcited and then disappointed if I didn't like it. I think it works out better reading a book with a clean slate.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. :) I'm now a follower.

  11. Ugh I have NO desire to read If I Stay. I started it, and the scenes with her family were so sweet that I just knew I wouldn't be able to handle the rest. I had a little trouble getting into Wicked Lovely, too...but the one that stands out in my own mind is Beautiful Creatures. Now I have to see if you've reviewed it!
