New to the TBR Pile (17)

Bought from Amazon.ca:
Always Emily
by Michaela MacColl

Emily and Charlotte Brontë are about as opposite as two sisters can be. Charlotte is practical and cautious; Emily is headstrong and imaginative. But they do have one thing in common: a love of writing. This shared passion will lead them to be two of the first published female novelists and authors of several enduring works of classic literature. But they’re not there yet. First, they have to figure out if there is a connection between a string of local burglaries, rumors that a neighbor’s death may not have been accidental, and the appearance on the moors of a mysterious and handsome stranger. The girls have a lot of knots to untangle—before someone else gets killed.

Dodger (Dodger #1)
by Terry Pratchett

A storm. Rain-lashed city streets. A flash of lightning. A scruffy lad sees a girl leap desperately from a horse-drawn carriage in a vain attempt to escape her captors. Can the lad stand by and let her be caught again? Of course not, because he's... Dodger.

Seventeen-year-old Dodger may be a street urchin, but he gleans a living from London's sewers, and he knows a jewel when he sees one. He's not about to let anything happen to the unknown girl—not even if her fate impacts some of the most powerful people in England.

From Dodger's encounter with the mad barber Sweeney Todd to his meetings with the great writer Charles Dickens and the calculating politician Benjamin Disraeli, history and fantasy intertwine in a breathtaking account of adventure and mystery.

Beloved and bestselling author Sir Terry Pratchett combines high comedy with deep wisdom in this tale of an unexpected coming-of-age and one remarkable boy's rise in a complex and fascinating world.

  1. Always Emily sounds like a really interesting book :) I hope you read it and enjoy it!! As usual, my TBR pile grew over the weeks and I'm kind of conflicted on what to read first haha. I have a lot of series yet to finish, and I don't know which one to continue :P Happy reading! :)

    1. That's one of the reasons I like stand-alone titles. I have a bad habit of starting series and not finishing them. Sometimes I just want a self-contained story, you know?

  2. I've never heard of either of these! Love the sound of Dodger though – he was always my favourite character in Oliver Twist!

    1. I'd heard of Always Emily, but not Dodger. I've never read anything by Terry Pratchett, though... so I thought this might be a good one to try.

  3. I haven't read Dodger yet, despite reading most everything Pratchett writes. Have you read any of his books before?

    1. Nope... I haven't read any of his books. I'm not even that familiar with the titles of the books he's written; I've heard his name a lot, though, so I know he's fairly popular.

  4. OH TERRY PRATCHETT! I (sadly and badly) have only really read 1.5 Pratchett books (I read Good Omens and then a graphic novel. xD) and I loved the nonsense and talent so I do need to read more. *glares at endless tbr*
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

    1. Good Omens is probably the only one of his titles that rings a bell... but I have no idea what it's about!

    1. I haven't read historical fiction in a while, so I'm kind of looking forward to that one.

  7. Really curious to see what you think of Always Emily. I'm more of a Charlotte fan than an Emily fan, but I'm pretty sure Charlotte is in there too...

    1. Yeah, I'm more of a Charlotte fan, too. I've heard that Emily had... issues. (Well, it's kind of obvious, judging by Wuthering Heights.)

I wonder if Anne makes an appearance at all...

  8. I'm not familiar with either of these titles, although granted I have at least heard of Terry Pratchett. I'm planning on one-clicking Lion's Share by Rachel Vincent later on today, and her short, Hunt, is supposed to be free although it's not showing as such yet, so that one's on my radar too.
